Stop the Killing
On the 11th of August, we held a “STOP! THE KILLING” performance event in Seoul Plaza in front of Seoul City Hall.
It was the last of our Bok Nal (the three hottest days of summer) campaign events, the 11th of August being the last of the hottest summer days (called “mal bok” in Korean) in 2017. The first of these events was the “STOP IT! 2017” festival held on the first hottest day of the year, called “cho bok” in Korean.
The choice of Seoul Plaza was designed to gain the attention—and hopefully participation—of the many people who pass through it every day.
“STOP! THE KILLING” highlighted the horrific suffering and needlessly cruel slaughter of dogs by replacing them with humans in the hopes that this juxtaposition would make people stop and think about what goes on in this “traditional” industry, and motivate them to raise their voices to condemn it and make it disappear forever.

Activists were covered with fake blood and confined in tiny cages to symbolize the plight of dogs suffering and dying in agony. In addition, protest slogans such as “Is this culture?” and “Dog meat is not Korean culture.” led to the participation of many of the citizens who stopped to look.
Dog meat is not traditional Korean culture, and the marketing of animals has persisted more for commercial purposes than for cultural reasons. Dog meat consumption can not be justified with such a weak argument as “cultural tradition.”
The anachronistic maltreatment of animals in the dog meat industry in Korea must be abolished.
